Keep the conversation you are in
Tap Record for a room or a memo. With iOS 26 or later, Listen can transcribe that recording on the phone, then separate the voices. If a voice is already in the bank your Mac taught, the phone can put its name on the transcript. Voices it does not recognise stay as A, B and C.
The phone also shows upcoming meetings from your calendar, with a way to start a recording under a meeting’s name. While it records, a Live Activity shows its progress on the Lock Screen, if Live Activities are enabled.
Your library comes along
Read and search recordings, transcripts and notes already on this iPhone without a connection. With sync switched on, your own iCloud carries the library between devices, sealed on each device with a key Listen does not hold. The phone’s quick transcript stays on the phone. When a Mac later makes its more accurate pass over the audio, that transcript syncs back and replaces the local one.
Chat can answer questions about locally retrieved passages, but answering needs a connection and your own OpenRouter API key. The passages used for a question go to OpenRouter with Zero Data Retention required and provider data collection denied. Recordings and offline search do not use Chat. How the connection works.
What you need
- iOS 18 or later to install and record. On iOS 18 to 25, the phone cannot transcribe its own recordings. A Mac running Listen has to read the synced audio before a transcript appears.
- iOS 26 or later and a supported language for transcription on the phone. Apple’s SpeechTranscriber reads ten languages here. If the phone or language is unsupported, Listen leaves transcription to the Mac instead of guessing the words.
- An Apple Account with iCloud sync switched on to share a library with a Mac or another device. The phone can record on its own, and on a supported phone with iOS 26 or later it can read its own recordings without a Mac. A Mac adds a better transcription pass, call recording and MCP access for your AI tools. Those features do not run on iPhone.
